Introduction to metaphor for business
Whether you are motivating a customer or leading teams, holding challenging conversations, making presentations or meeting targets, you need all the tools available to be at your disposal so that you can do a good job and do it easily. Cutting edge research shows that metaphor – experiencing of one kind of thing in terms of another – is how people think, get inspired, create, and solve problems, making metaphor a great tool to have. Without an awareness of metaphor and how to use it, you are working (metaphorically) with one arm behind your back.
Metaphor is increasingly used by professionals to make a point, overcome an obstacle, impress an audience or clinch a deal.
Working with metaphor cuts through complexity to make what is difficult, simple. It enables you to ‘step into the shoes’ of someone’s experience, identify the underlying motivations, and produce positive movement. By tapping into someone’s personal metaphors, you are more likely to help people find choices and solutions, to chart pathways through ‘stuckness’ and reluctance, and to dramatically improve the quality of communication. Moreover, there’s growing evidence to show that changes and solutions generated from metaphor are likely to ‘stick’ because they’ve been created by the very people who need them – yourself, your colleagues and your customers.
This one-day intensive gives you practical tools and techniques for identifying metaphors – your own, and those of others. Use it to great effect in goal-setting, team-building, growing confidence and capability, achieving peak performance, solving problems, resolving conflict, managing change, building relationships and creating a culture of excellence.
