Work-life balance: the myth in the metaphor

Latest research carried out by Clean Change Company in conjunction with the University of Surrey into the somewhat stereotyped notion of ‘work-life balance’ reveals that this is one metaphor that is more cliché than catch-all. If, like others, you imagine a pair of old-fashioned scales with ‘work’ in one pan and ‘life’ in the other, then chances are you too have been misled.

Below are links to two reports regarding our research.  The first, ‘More than a balancing Act? ‘Clean Language’ as an innovative method for exploring work-life balance’ , is the initial report.  The second, ‘Symbolic Modelling as an innovative phenomenological method in HRD research: the work-life balance project’, is the paper written by Dr. Paul Tosey (Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey and a member of our research team) for the prestigious UFHRD (University Forum for Human Resource Development)/AHRD (Academy of HRD) Annual European Conference in 2011, where he was awarded the Alan Moon Memorial Prize for Best Refereed Paper.
