Multi-layered modeling at NLP Conference
Penny Tompkins and James Lawley presented a multi-layered modeling experience at the London NLP Conference at the weekend. A few months ago, Penny and James had used Symbolic Modelling to find out about leading NLP modeller Robert Dilts’ working process. At the conference, they showed a video of the conversation, and then invited the group to try out their model of Robert’s process in modelling Penny’s dinner-party planning skills. With many NLP ‘big names’ in the room offering ideas, the group received close-up insights into a variety of ways to model, which they were able to compare and contrast with what worked for them as individuals.

This year’s Conference was fully booked weeks in advance, with a waiting list of more than 100 people. For more details, go to www.nlpconference.co.uk

Clean Business Exchange
“Look out, business world! Clean Language looks set for great things.” That was the message from the Clean Business Exchange in London recently, which brought together people who actively use Clean in business contexts. As they shared ideas and approaches (including the Clean-ish World Café and Masterminding), a new sense of confidence was clearly present. Watch this space for the next developments. And if you use Clean in business, make a note of the next event – 19 and 20 November 2008.

Shop online
Want a gift idea for a Clean enthusiast? Our online store doesn’t aim to compete with the likes of Amazon, but it does have some unusual products.

For beginners, there’s a studio-recorded introductory CD, A Taste of Clean Language (http://www.cleanchange.co.uk/store/a-taste-of-clean-language-cd-p-18.html), featuring Judy Rees, or
for the more experienced there’s Penny Tomkins and James Lawley speaking on Self-Deception,
Self-Delusion and Self-Denial http://www.cleanchange.co.uk/store/selfdeception-selfdelusion-and-selfdenial-p-29.html), available as a download here.

The store also includes details of all Clean Change Company’s Clean Language trainings and other events. Apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced by the site’s teething troubles last month: these should now have been ironed out.

Pinker plug for Penny & James
The Stuff of Thought by Steven Pinker was mentioned in the October Clean Newsletter. If you’d rushed out and bought a copy you’ll have noticed that Pinker says “A book on psychotherapy called Metaphors in Mind calls on therapists to work with their patients’ metaphors like: ‘I have a sensitive radar for insults’ and ‘I’m trapped behind a door’.” If you are interested in being facilitated to work with your metaphors, James and Penny would be pleased to have you join them on a Self-Modelling Weekend, March 8-9, 2008. Visit our site for details. (http://www.cleanlanguage.co.uk/articles/pages/Self-modelling-weekends.html)

Cleaning Tip: Don’t paraphrase on flip-charts
This week’s tip comes from Annemiek van Helsdingen, who uses Clean extensively when facilitating groups in businesses. She says: “When you’re in a meeting, writing up the comments from the group on a flipchart, use the person’s exact words! If you try to translate things into your own words, it wastes time and often the main message gets lost. At a meeting last week which was divided into two groups, one flip-chart was being written up by a Clean-trained person, one by someone who wasn’t Clean-trained and was constantly paraphrasing what people said. Writing up exactly what
they said was much quicker – probably about 50 per cent quicker.”

Article: How the brain feels
If you have a spare hour or so, it’s well worth taking a browse through the articles section on www.cleanlanguage.co.uk. For example, we can recommend this article by Philip Harland, ‘How the brain feels’ (http://www.cleanlanguage.co.uk/articles/articles/104/1/How-the-Brain-Feels-Part-5-added/Page1.html), first published in 2002.

Top metaphor man to speak in UK
George Lakoff, co-author of Metaphors We Live By and several other books of great interest to Symbolic Modellers, is to speak at a conference on Language, Communication and Cognition at the University of Brighton, UK next summer. And there’s still a change to submit academic papers for the event – the deadline has been extended to 2 December. Full details are available at www.languageandcognition.net

And what would Belfast like to have happen?
Marian Way and Zannie Barrett ran a 2-day introduction to Clean Language in Belfast. Several of the participants live and work in areas still recovering from violent conflict. One woman was amazed by the realisation that language can be used for such positive ends. Rather than swimming round and round in a soup of other people’s pain with them, she can now listen, acknowledge and then ask, ‘And what would you like to have happen?’.
