Seasonal salutations from all at Clean Change Company and The Developing Company! We hope the New Year brings you all you wish for.

This month's newsletter is packed with reading and activities, just in case you find you have a quiet moment over the festive season...

Successful Resolutions with Clean Language

Curious about how Clean Language can be used in a 'conventional' coaching situation? Or still looking for an opportunity to experience Clean for yourself? Why not join our telephone seminar on either 28 December or 11 January?

Clean edition of The Model magazine
The next edition of The Model, due out between Christmas and New Year, will be a Clean special with four articles from within our community - by James Lawley & Penny Tompkins, Steve Saunders, Phil Swallow & Wendy Sullivan, and Judy Rees. The online edition of the magazine will appear here: www.bbnlp.com. Meanwhile, you can read a version of

James and Penny's article, "Proximity and Meaning: a clean approach to adjacency".

Add magic to your New Year
Why not make this the year you become a 'magician of metaphor' and start to truly experience the power of Clean change? The Model magazine owners Toby and Kate McCartney will be among the participants on Clean Change Company's Module 1: Working Magic and Module 2: Conjuring Change on 20-23 January in West London. Are you ready to join them? Full details here

Success story: On the ropes
Chris Barratt uses a Clean approach with his young clients on High Ropes adventure courses, just as they're about to start climbing. He said: "I ask them: 'And what would you like to have happen?' I've had some great answers (some that I have never heard before) and I have followed them up with the other Clean questions with interesting results."

Modelling the Modelling Masters
Would you like to construct your own model of how Penny and James achieve the results they do with their therapy clients? A unique event in Bath on 27 and 28 February provides the ideal opportunity. In 'Modelling the Modelling Masters' a small group, led by a core of expert Symbolic Modellers, will observe and question Penny and James over a number of sessions with a client. What would you like to have happen? Details here

Cleaning Tip: A festive challenge
It's that time of year again - we're going to be spending time with the relatives! How can you use Clean Language to get to know them better instead of the usual well-worn exchanges?

Here's a challenge. Take an event in your shared family history - ideally something fun, like a holiday - and ask your relatives about it. Then notice how different family members describe the event differently. Listen carefully, and it's likely that:

  • People will have different opinions on what 'really' happened, and each will be absolutely certain that their view is correct.
  • Each person will use different metaphors as they describe the event. "It was like..." You could explore their metaphors further by asking 'And is there anything else about x like that? For example, "And is there anything else about [time stood still] like that?"

What do you notice about how the metaphors used affect other aspects of the memory for a particular person?

All change for Zannie

Many of you know Zannie Barrett, who has managed Small Change Company's course bookings for the last few years, in addition to her responsibilities as assistant to Penny Tompkins and James Lawley. This work has now outgrown the time she has available and in future, bookings will be handled direct through the Clean Change Company office in Isleworth, Middlesex. Zannie said: "I'll still be working with Penny and James and developing my own work in the wider Clean community, so please keep in touch!" To contact Zannie, use zannie@cleanlanguage.co.uk and for Clean Change Company bookings, please email bookings@cleanchange.co.uk

Penny Tompkins and James Lawley participated in a two-day event at The Northern School of NLP http://www.nlpand.co.uk where they observed leading NLP trainer and author Robert Dilts modelling an exemplar the first day, and on the second they had an opportunity to model Robert by using Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling. The participants were fascinated by the quality and amount of information that could be elicited about Robert's internal modelling strategies.
